Post-industrial material comes from manufacturing processes where virgin resources go to waste. This material is collected and used in a product other than that for which it was originally harvested. Post-consumer material comes from products that are no longer used for their intended purpose. Recyclable products are separated from the waste stream, often broken down into raw materials, and then sold to manufacturers for reuse.
Total Recycled Material is the amount of post-industrial recycled material plus the amount of post-consumer recycled material contained in a product.
Post-Consumer Recycled Material is simply the amount of post-consumer recycled material contained in a product. Sometimes manufacturers do not report the amount of recycled material because of variance from batch to batch. In this case you will find the recycled content icon without the standard subscript indicating total and post-consumer percentages. It should be assumed that these products contain post-industrial and NOT post-consumer material.
